SPEAKING
SAVING WATER MEASURES
What can we do to save water?
Water is such an important resource for life that it is crucial to educate children in relation to the respect for the environment and promote good values among them. Both raising awareness about the importance of saving water and teaching some measures that all of us should put into practise, are some advice that we as teacher must follow.
Throughout this speaking activity, students will have the opportunity to practice oral skills as well as work on social and civil competences.
After distributing the students in small groups of four or five children, each group will be given two packs of cards: the first one contains the pictures and the second one contains the explanations of each action represented on the pictures.
Students will have to discuss in oral English to agree and finally match each explanation with its correspondent picture.
READING
Lola the Whale
The students will have to read the following story (out loud and by turns) about a lonely whale called Lola. The teacher plays a guide role and he/she will indicate the turn of each student to read. All the students must follow the reading at any time, no matter whether it is their turn or not.
If they don´t understand the meaning of any word, they should underline it and ask to the teacher in a convenient moment to clear up the doubts.
After reading the story a couple of times, students will be required to complete the quiz that they will find clicking on the following link:

Lola the Whale was big - very big - , and lonely - very lonely. For years she
had wanted nothing to do with anyone, and she had become sadder and sadder. Whenever anyone tried to get close to her and cheer her up, Lola would move off.

Many thought that she was the most unpleasant whale in the world, and they started ignoring her. They did so, despite the fact that old Turga, a hundred year-old sea turtle, told them that Lola had always been a good, kind whale.
One day, Dido, a young dolphin, heard the whole story, and decided to secretly follow the whale. She found out that Lola behaved very strangely. The whale would beat her mouth against the rocks, endanger herself by swimming between the biggest waves and the coast, and go to the seafloor and eat sand. No one knew it, but Lola had terribly bad breath because a little fish had got trapped in a corner of her mouth. This problem embarrassed Lola so much that she didn't dare to speak to anyone. When Dido realised this, she offered to help, but Lola didn't want to bother her with her bad breath. Nor did she want anyone to find out.
"Is that why you've spent so much time away from everyone?" answered Dido, unable to believe it. "They don't think you've got bad breath, they think you're unpleasant, boring, and ungrateful, and that you hate everyone. Do you think that's better?”
Lola realised that her pride - her exaggerated shyness, and not letting anyone help - had created an even greater problem. Full of regret, she asked Dido to remove the remains of the fish in her mouth.
When this was done, Lola began speaking to everyone again. However, she had to make a big effort to be accepted again by her friends. Lola decided that never again would she fail to ask for help when she really needed it.

WELCOME!
Welcome to Our English Corner!
My name is Fernando Navarro. I studied the Grade of Primary Education at Universidade da Coruña from 2010 to 2014. After finishing the degree I went to Belfast (Northern Ireland), where I lived nine months studying English (I got the First certificate of Cambridge University) and working as a waiter in the Ramada Hotel. When I came back to Spain, I got a job as English teacher for children in the Air Hostess English Academy. However, I have never stopped studying this language, and I got the C1 certificate of the Trinity College a year ago. I am currently studying at Universidad Internacional de la Rioja (UNIR) to get the English specialty of my degree.
This blog has been created as a requirement of an activity proposed by the subject ICT Tools Applied to the Learning of English Language. The purpose of the blog is to design and share five different original activities for Children within which they will be able to practice both production and comprehension skills: speaking, writing, listening and reading.
In order to motivate our students and make the learning process more significant, the five activities will be part of an interdisciplinary project between English and Natural Science. The project is called "Water for life", so the activities of the blog, apart from working on the English Skills, will be based on different contents related to the water cycle, aquatic ecosystems, seas and oceans, etc. All the activities have been designed to be applied in the third grade of Primary Education.
I hope you enjoy the activities created for this blog!!
Best wishes!!
